About

Early life and education

Ivar’s educational journey began at the renowned Gordonstoun School in Scotland, where he was joined by several members of his extended family. After completing his secondary education, he crossed the Atlantic to attend Middlebury College in the United States. He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geology, which he later applied in the mining industry.

Professional career

After university, Ivar moved to Venezuela, where he spent seven years working for a mining company. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to return to the UK, where he has since created and developed a variety of successful businesses across sectors such as self-storage, hospitality, and farming.

Personal life

Ivar was previously married to Penny (divorced in 2010), with whom he has three daughters: Ella (born 1996), Alexandra (Alix, born 1998), and Louise (Luli, born 2002). Ivar’s personal and professional life reflects his dynamic approach to business and family, underpinned by a strong sense of duty and tradition.

Public role and royal connections

In addition to his entrepreneurial pursuits, Ivar serves as a Deputy Lieutenant for Devon, representing the King at various public events and ceremonies. His role as a Deputy Lieutenant involves standing in for the Lord Lieutenant of Devon when required.

Having spent much of his formative years in the United States, Ivar’s upbringing was greatly influenced by his step-grandmother, Josephine Hartford, the heiress to the A&P Grocery empire, one of the wealthiest women of her time. This connection to American high society has contributed to Ivar’s broad worldview and deep-rooted sense of service to both his heritage and the communities he engages with.

The mountbatten family

Lord Ivar Mountbatten is a direct descendant of one of Europe’s most distinguished and historic families, with ties to royalty across several nations. His lineage connects him to the British monarchy as well as the last Tsar of Russia, and he is a proud descendant of Queen Victoria through his great-grandmother, Princess Victoria of Hesse, Queen Victoria’s granddaughter.

The mountbatten name

The name Mountbatten was established in 1917 when King George V, in response to anti-German sentiment following World War I, ordered the British Royal Family to anglicize their German titles. Prince Louis of Battenberg, Lord Ivar’s great-grandfather and the serving head of the Royal Navy, renounced his German citizenship and titles. In recognition of his service, he was created the 1st Marquess of Milford Haven and adopted the surname Mountbatten. Today, Ivar’s brother is the 4th Marquess of Milford Haven, continuing the family’s noble legacy.

Royal and russian heritage

Lord Ivar’s royal connections extend beyond Britain. On his Russian side, he is a direct descendant of both Catherine the Great and Tsar Nicholas I, as well as the celebrated Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Pushkin’s granddaughter, who married Grand Duke Michael of Russia, is Lord Ivar’s great-grandmother, further intertwining the Mountbatten family with Russia’s imperial history.

Connection to the british royal family

Lord Ivar’s great-uncle, the legendary Earl Mountbatten of Burma (often referred to as Dickie), was a key figure in British history. He was the uncle of Prince Philip, the father of King Charles III, making King Charles Lord Ivar’s second cousin. This deep connection places Lord Ivar within the broader framework of the British royal family and its extensive, storied lineage.
